Of course, a designer must know the technical performance capacities of materials, such as their durability or strength, but it is not this pragmatic aspect of performance that I want to consider here. Instead, I am taking the uncomplicated, non-theatrical, meaning of performance as 'the doing of an action'. Part of the event of an interior concerns a relationship between matter and people, and what each does with, or to, the other. Both the animate and the inanimate are protagonists in this event. The performance that I wish to discuss is 'what is happening' as a result of the complex entanglement of these things in this place with these people at this moment in time.

Public organizations account for their performance through making public sector performance information publicly available, both to politicians through performance reporting, and to citizens through rankings, websites, and performance reports. This chapter reviews whether performance reporting makes public organizations more accountable: Do citizens and politicians actually consult and use performance information, and does this information change their decisions and behaviours? The chapter first looks at the use of performance metrics in political decision making, drivers of this use, and differences in use across groups. It subsequently reviews the literature on whether citizens use publicly available performance indicators and rankings to make an informed choice between alternative service providers. The focus is on s...
The essay addresses recent performance art practices in the UK that employs fiction as a means of producing social relations and scenes. The essay relates such practices to Berardi's notion of singularities, Virno's reflections on ritual and Deleuze's thoughts on Foucault's notion of the statement.
This research project participates in the genre of Performance art. It explores performativity in relation to Emmanuel Levinas' formulation of two interlacing modes of language, the ethical saying and the ontological, political said. The saying is of my originary, ethical relation to the other person that constitutes me, whereas the said is the mode of 'content', knowledge, and ontology. The project suggests that at least two registers of performativity pertain to the saying. One is in Simon Critchley's description of the saying as performative, prior to any decision to perform. In regard to another meaning of performativity, I propose that a political signification of art may be what Levinas calls a "reduction" of the said that 'performs' a showing of the saying. To perform a showing of the saying, would, in a Levinasian engagement, b...
The architectural object is concerned with its image. However, as Yves Alain Bois notes, the flatness of the photograph “denies the real content of the work.” This thesis unpacks the collapse of object and image by exploring the relationship between the path and the object: the path offers an experience not simply a view.
In the emerging mega-city of Manila, malls are ever-present entities. Mainly for the upper class, they form an episodic network, where seeing and being seen is as important as shopping.
By combining a series of theaters with the Filipino reliance on shopping centers, a new typology is formed: the PERFORMANCE MALL. Adapting Garnier, Scharoun, and the mall, this project establishes space for the few and the many simultaneously. The motion within the theater complex creates a continuous spectacle of performance and...
In the Device Performance group, within the National Center for Photovoltaic's Measurements and Characterization Division, we measure the performance of PV cells and modules with respect to standard reporting conditions--defined as a reference temperature (25 C), total irradiance (1000 Wm-2), and spectral irradiance distribution (IEC standard 60904-3). Typically, these are ''global'' reference conditions, but we can measure with respect to any reference set. To determine device performance, we conduct two general categories of measurements: spectral responsivity (SR) and current versus voltage (I-V). We usually perform these measurements using standard procedures, but we develop new procedures when required by new technologies. We also serve as an independent facility for verifying device performance for the entire PV community. We hel...
The Brookhaven Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) is the first hadron accelerator and collider consisting of two independent rings. It is designed to operate at high collision luminosity over a wide range of beam energies and with particle species ranging from polarized protons to heavy ions. Construction of RHIC was officially completed in 1999. An overview of the status of commissioning and machine performance for the first operation period with gold beams is given.
