For many individuals in treatment for cocaine dependence, weight gain is a substantial problem during recovery. This weight gain causes significant distress and seems to increase the risk of relapse. The mechanisms underlying cocaine?s effects on weight remain elusive. It is widely assumed that this weight gain reflects a metabolic or behavioural compensatory response to the cessation of cocaine use. Here we challenge this assumption and outline potential mechanisms by which chronic cocaine use produces disturbances in the regulation of fat intake and storage, through its effects on the central and peripheral nervous systems, specifically the sympathetic nervous system. We hypothesise that the cocaine-induced alteration in fat regulation results in cocaine users developing a pronounced appetite for fatty food but keeps their fat mass l...
Although multiple forms of testosterone replacement therapy are available to treat hypogonadism, none is ideal. This article reports on the pharmacokinetics of an innovative nasal formulation of testosterone in hypogonadal men. The first study was undertaken in eight men with a baseline total testosterone (TT) of 130.8 ± 87.4 ng/dL and examined the pharmacokinetics of nasal testosterone given in a single dose of 7.6 mg, 15.2 mg or 22.8 mg, respectively. The second study examined the pharmacokinetics of nasal testosterone (7.6 mg) given either twice or three times a day in 21 severely hypogonadal men (baseline TT in 20 patients <50 ng/dL, in one patient 152 ng/dL) for 14 days. The steady-state concentration of testosterone was within the normal range in all treatment groups, but only in the 3-times-a-day group was the 95% confidence ...
© 2015 Informa UK Ltd. Objectives: This study aims to investigate the metabolic effects of biphasic insulin lispro 50/50 in routine clinical practice. A total of 229 patients who were 18 years old with diabetes, newly treated with biphasic insulin lispro 50/50, were sourced from six secondary care services in England. Methods: Detailed clinical parameters were compared at baseline, and 3 and 6 months post-initiation. Responders was defined as those with HbA1c <7.5% (58mmol/mol) and/or an HbA1c reduction of >1% (11mmol/mol) at 6 months. Results: HbA1c showed significant reduction:-0.93% (-10mmol/mol) and-1.2% (-13mmol/mol) at 3 and 6 months respectively, while no significant change was noted for all the other parameters. When analyzed according to frequencies of injections/day, the greatest reduction was observed with the three times a ...

Circadian clocks maintain temporal homeostasis by generating daily output rhythms in molecular, cellular, and physiological functions. Output rhythms, such as sleep/wake cycles and hormonal fluctuations, tend to deteriorate during aging in humans, rodents, and fruit flies. However, it is not clear whether this decay is caused by defects in the core transcriptional clock, or weakening of the clock-output pathways, or both. The authors monitored age-related changes in behavioral and molecular rhythms in Drosophila melanogaster. Aging was associated with disrupted rest/activity patterns and lengthening of the free-running period of the circadian locomotor activity rhythm. The expression of core clock genes was measured in heads and bodies of young, middle-aged, and old flies. Transcriptional oscillations of four clock genes, period, timel...
Background: The trend of escalating obesity has prompted some armed forces to employ comprehensive health surveys to report obesity trends and prevalence, the findings of which suggest that obesity is a growing concern in these specific populations. Aim: To provide an appraisal of obesity prevalence and risk to obesity-related diseases in the British Army in relation to age, gender, military rank and employment. Subjects and method: An observational cohort study (n=50 635) consisting of 47 173 men and 3462 women was drawn from a study sample hosted on the Fitness Information Software System (FISS) (n=54 854). Multiple logistic regression techniques were employed separately for men and women. Results: According to BMI, 56.7% of the study population were overweight and of those individuals 12% were obese. Whilst a higher percentage of ma...
Tutkimuksen päämäärä on tutkia poistoja, joita esiintyy Helsingin yliopiston ylioppilaskunnan edustajiston kokouksen simultaanitulkkauksessa huhtikuussa 2015. Olen itse toiminut tulkkina kyseisessä kokouksessa ja tutkin miten oma suoritukseni vaikuttaa kokouksen ydinsisällön välittymiseen tulkkeen kuuntelijalle. Tutkimuksen teoriatausta rakentuu Daniel Gilen tulkkausprosessin mallista, Henri Barikin, Anthony Pymin ja Nina Isolahden tutkimuksista, jotka käsittelevät informaation poistoja tulkkauksessa sekä Pauli Saukkosen mallista hahmottaa tekstin makrorakenne, joka mahdollistaa eri elementtien funktioiden tunnistamisen. Teoriatausta ottaa huomioon simultaanitulkkauksen henkisen kuormittavuuden, tulkkaustilanteen viestinnälliset päämäärät tilanteessa olevien vihjeiden perusteella sekä poistetun informaation funktion. Esitän tutkimuks...
