High hydrostatic pressure (HHP) is the most-widely adopted novel non-thermal technology for the commercial pasteurization of foods. However, HHP-induced inactivation of bacterial spores remains a challenge due their resistance to the treatment limits of currently available industrial HHP units (i.e., ~650 MPa and 50°C). Several reports have demonstrated that high pressure can modulate the germination machinery of bacterial spores rendering them susceptible to subsequent inactivation treatments. Unfortunately, high pressure-induced germination is a unique phenomenon for spores of the genus Bacillus but not Clostridium. Alternative strategies to inactivate bacterial spores at commercially available pressure and temperature levels include the germination step by inclusion of known germinants into the food formulation to increase the letha...
The objectives of this study were to determine the extent of absorption of functionalized
single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) across the gut epithelial cells in Daphnia magna.
Several microscopic techniques were utilized, including micro-Raman spectroscopy, high-resolution
transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and selective area diffraction (SAD). In an
effort to examine the variation in uptake due to surface properties, four groups of differently
functionalized SWCNTs were used: hydroxylated (OH-SWCNTs), silicon dioxide (SiO₂-SWCNTs),
poly aminobenzenesulfonic acid (PABS-SWCNTs) and polyethylene glycol (PEG-SWCNTs).
Raman spectroscopy was able to detect OH-SWCNTs within the gut, but lacked the spatial
resolution that is needed to identify lower concentrations of SWCNTs that may have been
absorbed by body tissues. Initial...
Background and aim: Individuals living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) often face progressive loss of function, uncertainty and disruption to self-image and valued roles. Previous studies show that creative self-expression is valued by some people living with long-term illness, yet its meaning for people living with MS is unclear. This research study explored the meanings of leisure-based visual art-making for people living with MS. Method: This qualitative study followed guidelines for Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Single semi-structured interviews were conducted with five adults (2 males; 3 females; 40–65 years), recruited from MS Ireland. Findings: Participants valued art-making for contributing to a more satisfying way of life; for filling occupational voids and using time well. Deep immersion offered respite from wo...

Importance of the field:
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) occur as natural by-products of oxygen metabolism and have important cellular functions. Normally, the cell is able to maintain an adequate balance between the formation and removal of ROS either via anti-oxidants or through the use specific enzymatic pathways. However, if this balance is disturbed, oxidative stress may occur in the cell, a situation linked to the pathogenesis of many diseases, including cancer.
Areas covered in this review:
HDACs are important regulators of many oxidative stress pathways including those involved with both sensing and coordinating the cellular response to oxidative stress. In particular aberrant regulation of these pathways by histone deacetylases may play critical roles in cancer progression.

Melodic Intonation Therapy (MIT) has proved to be an effective treatment in severe Broca's aphasia. It has been suggested that due to its musical/prosodic content, it activates the intact right hemisphere which may have latent linguistic capabilities. We studied the effects of MIT vs. ordinary repetition performance on hemispheric brain perfusion as measured by single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) in three aphasic patients. Two of them suffered from nonfluent aphasia but were nevertheless poor responders to MIT training. None of the three patients showed relatively higher right hemisphere activation during MIT. In contrast, one nonfluent patient showed increased left hemisphere activation and the other one exhibited a mixed activation pattern. Either the right hemisphere activation hypothesis is incorrect or it holds only...
Purpose: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death. Among the new modalities to treat cancer, internal radiotherapy seems to be very promising. However, the achievable dose-rate is two orders of magnitude lower than the one used in conventional external radiotherapy, and data has to be collected to evaluate the cell response to highlight the potential effectiveness of low-dose-rate beta particles irradiation. This work investigates the phosphorus beta irradiation ( P) dose response on the clonogenicity of human A549 non-small cell lung adenocarcinoma cells and compares it to high-dose-rate X-irradiations results. Materials and methods: Cell survival was evaluated by a colony forming assay eight days after low-dose-rate P beta irradiations (0.8 Gy/h) and high-dose-rate X-ray irradiations (0.855 Gy/min). Results: Survival ...
