Essay on the backlash against the digital humanities movement
This paper analyses the concept of digital literacies, focusing on recent changes in the concept of literacy itself and how the latter affect the so-called "new literacies". An outline of the core components of digital literacies is proposed, and one of these, the 'multimediality' of many literate practices, is analysed in detail. Finally, the paper proposes a shift whereby the question of digital literacies might be considered as a research question and not just as an applied field.

Progression of the field depends on convergence of information technology, operational technology and protocol-agnostic telecommunications. Making sense of the data, ability to curate data and perform data analytics at the edge (or mist rather than in the fog or cloud) is key to value. Delivering engines to the edge are crucial for analytics at the edge when latency is critical. The confluence of these and other factors may chart the future path for Digital Twins. The number of unknown unknowns and the known unknowns in this process makes it imperative to create global infrastructures and organize groups to pursue the development of fundamental building blocks and new ideas through research.
Screens mediate an ever-increasing part of our experience today. While the space within our screens is indispensable - as perceptually ‘real’ as embodied experience itself - this space tends to exclude the hands and body in favour of the eye and mind. This bifurcation does not recognize or allow for the integration of body and mind that is both fundamental to our well-being and vital to the process of making things. Moreover, immersion within our screens dulls an awareness of ourselves in relation to them.
