The research described in this thesis focussed on the role of apolipoproteins in lipid metabolism, inflammation and bacterial sepsis, with specific emphasis on apoCI. From studies in human APOC1¬-transgenic and apoc1-/- mice, we were able to identify apoCI as a potent inhibitor of triglyceride hydrolysis by inhibiting lipoprotein lipase. Since APOC1 mice have thus increased VLDL levels, and VLDL protects against bacterial infection, we studied whether apoCI could play a role in inflammation and infection. We found that apoCI was able to bind lipopolysaccharide (LPS), the main toxic component of Gram-negative bacteria. Interestingly, although other apolipoproteins which have been studied have anti-inflammatory properties, we found that apoCI is a pro-inflammatory protein. By enhancing the biological response towards LPS and Gram-negativ...
This text aims to describe the evolution of the semantics of the French “complex” demonstratives ce N-ci ‘this’ and ce N-là ‘that’ from their first occurrences onwards. We will look in particular into the semantics of the elements –ci and –là, hypothesizing that the semantics of the simple demonstrative (ce), which has been extensively described in the literature, has remained unchanged in the complex forms. After an analysis of the uses of ce N-ci and ce N-là in a corpus of Middle French texts, we willverify whether these complex forms have taken over the distribution of the semantics of the Old French paradigms cist and cil.
While comprehensive and ongoing competitive
intelligence (CI) is employed in a variety of
industries to provide valuable input for broad
strategic decisions, the construction industry lags
behind in adopting this technique. This paper
presents a CI model for use in the construction
contractor selection process, which is a critical
element of construction project management and one
that inherently entails risk and risk management.
The use of CI for contractor selection is an
important development in light of the realization on
the part of many companies that the diffuse nature
of the information and lack of robust analysis create
numerous inconveniences during the decision making
process. Based on the application of the CI
method for a competitive environment, the proposed
model has the potential to improve the process for
assessing and...
Context. Carbon monoxide (CO) is widely used as a tracer of the molecular gas in almost all types of environments. However, several shortcomings of CO complicate usaging it as H2 tracer, such as its optical depth effects, the dependence of its abundance on metallicity, or its susceptibility to dissociation in highly irradiated regions. Neutral carbon emission has been proposed to overcome some of these shortcomings and hence to help revealing the limits of CO as a measure of the molecular gas.
Aims. We aim to study the general characteristics of the spatially and spectrally resolved carbon line emission in a variety of extragalactic sources and evaluate its potential as complementary H2 tracer to CO.
Methods. We used the Atacama Compact Array to map the [CI](3P1–3P0) line emission in the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253 at unprecedent...
Continuous Integration (CI) is a software engineering practice where developers break their coding tasks into small changes that can be integrated with the shared code repository on a frequent basis. The primary objectives of CI are to avoid integration problems caused by large change sets and to provide prompt developer feedback so that if a problem is detected, it can be easily and quickly resolved. In this thesis, we argue that while keeping changes small and integrating often is a wise approach for developers, the CI server may be more efficient operating on a different scale. In our approach, the CI server monitors the queue of commits to be integrated and merges multiple commits into a single Uber commit, thus avoiding the redundant operations, e.g., testing, associated with integrating each commit individually. If an Uber commit...
