If recurrent novae are progenitors of Type Ia supernovae, their white dwarfs must have masses close to the Chandrasekhar limit. The most reliable means of determining white dwarf masses in recurrent novae is dynamically, via radial-velocity and rotational-broadening measurements of the companion star. Such measurements require the system to be both eclipsing and to show absorption features from the secondary star. Prior to the work reported here, the only dynamical mass estimate of a recurrent nova was for U Sco, which has a white dwarf mass of 1.55 +/- 0.24 Msolar (Thoroughgood et al. 2001).
We present new time-resolved, intermediate-resolution spectroscopy of the eclipsing recurrent nova CI Aquilae (CI Aql) during quiescence. We find the mass of the white dwarf to be 1.00 +/- 0.14 Msolar and the mass of the secondary star to be 2.32...
Gallup has recently given a solution to the problem of determining an orthogonal representation matrix for an arbitrary permutation of the symmetric group in terms of sandwich representations. In this paper it is shown how this provides a means for the precalculation and storage of the necessary distinct coefficients needed in the construction of the various Hamiltonian matrix elements of an orthogonal orbital CI calculation. This method has the advantage over those published previously in that the spin degeneracy problem is handled more efficiently. It is shown that this procedure can be utilized with both the "construction and storage" algorithms and, also, the recently developed "direct vector" methods when dealing with large Hamiltonian matrices. Can a payment in satisfaction of an antecedent debt be both a preference under section 239 of the UK Insolvency Act 1986, and therefore, a transaction at an undervalue pursuant to section 238 of the UK Insolvency Act 1986? Describing it as an interesting question of law on which there was no direct authority, the English High Court in Barber v CI answered in the affirmative. In this commentary, we evaluate that decision and submit that it is difficult to defend. Two main propositions emerge from our analysis: First, a transaction can never properly be reversed or adjusted pursuant to section 238 simply because it is liable to being challenged on some other legal ground (including section 239). Near-infrared chemical imaging (NIR-CI) is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry not only to provide the concentration of a compound of interest but far more often to obtain the spatial distribution of different ingredients within the considered sample like a single tablet. For such sample characterization, having a high field of view is of major interest. As well as their high field of view, recent NIR-CI spectrometers have the ability to acquire thousands of spectra in a very short time due to focal plane array detector they use. Nevertheless, the spatial resolution is often limited which implies that generated chemical images are often biased.
