The present work examines the problems encountered during the design, construction and testing of a fully computer-controlled system for automatic calibration of ion-selective electrodes (ISEs), based on two data acquisition boards, a home-made fast multifunction potentiostat, two peristaltic pumps and an injection valve. With few minor modifications, the experimental setup allows the using of batch and flow techniques for automatic calibration of ISEs, operated in potentiometric or amperometric mode. For flow measurements, a wall-jet cell (WJC) was designed, built and characterized. Using [Fe(CN)6]3-/[Fe(CN)6]4- as standard redox couple, the WJC amperometric response was examined in order to establish the dispersion factor as well as the hydrodynamic regime as a function of the flow rate and...
The automatic generation of adjoints of mathematical models that are implemented as computer programs is receiving a increased attention in the scientific and engineering communities. Reverse-mode Automatic Differentiation (AD) is of particular interest for large-scale optimization problems. It allows for the computation of gradients at a small constant multiple of the cost for evaluating the objective function itself, that is independent of the number of input parameters. Source-to-source transformation tools for AD are available to generate adjoint codes based on the adjoint version of every statement, built by applying simple differentiation rules. A reversal of the control flow of the original program becomes necessary. To guarantee correctness, certain values that are computed and overwritten in the original program must be made a...
The analysis of the leading social video sharing platform YouTube reveals a high amount of redundancy, in the form of videos with overlapping or duplicated content. In this paper, we show that this redundancy can provide useful information about connections between videos. We reveal these links using robust content-based video analysis techniques and exploit them for generating new tag assignments. To this end, we propose different tag propagation methods for automatically obtaining richer video annotations. Our techniques provide the user with additional information about videos, and lead to enhanced feature representations for applications such as automatic data organization and search. Experiments on video clustering and classification as well as a user evaluation demonstrate the viability of our approach.
The automatic visualization and quantitative analysis of cardiac SPECT data requires the ability to automatically segment and extract voxels representing the heart. The attributes of the 3D data make this task quite challenging. In this paper, we attempt to address these issues and propose an algorithm which successfully detects the voxels belonging to the Left Ventricle (LV) of the heart and filters out the noise and all other interfering organs. The algorithm relies on various image processing and pattern analysis techniques as well as the constraints put forward by the anatomy. The final outcome of this algorithm is a segmented 3D dataset containing voxels pertaining only to the LV. This filtered dataset is then employed for automatic determination of LV orientation. The results show that this methodology is a very promising approac...
Load frequency Control (LFC) is used for many years as part of Automatic Generation Control (AGC) in power system around the world. In a mixed power system, it is usual to find an area regulated by hydro generation interconnected to another area regulated by thermal generation or in combination of both. In the following study, performance of AGC for Thermal, Hydro and Thermal turbine based power system is examined, including how frequency bias setting influences AGC response and inadvertent interchange. Control performance analysis of three area interconnected systems is simulated and studied through Matlab Simulink software. Integral square error and Integral time absolute error has been used as performance criterion. It is shown that integral time absolute error (ITAE) as performance index leads to faster optimization of controller g...
In this paper we present a method for adapting an articulatory model to a new speaker from acoustic data only. The main goal of this method is to make acoustic-to-articulatory inversion a fully automatic process. Speaker-specificity is modeled by a two dimensional scale factor, which makes it more flexible than VTLN methods. Validation of the method is performed on three speakers by comparing the scale factors found on medical images of the vocal tract and those estimated. These experiments show that the method is accurate provided that the speech material covers a wide acoustic space. Two additional experiments on longitudinal acoustic data are presented, in order to study vocal tract evolution with age.
In this paper, we present the feasibility of the Automatic Guided Vehicle (AGV) application as a platform for gait monitoring in non-laboratory environments. Proposed technique could be used by participants with difficulties to wear on board sensors, or devices. First of all, we present the study of the basic problems in the field of computer vision for medical applications: the gait parameters measurements of the spatial point, and sponsored a novel way of two-dimension parameters data acquisition from a single image captured by a monocular camera. A novel Foot Flat Phase (FFP) detection method is investigated that could effectively overcome the influence of viewpoints on static gait motion capture devices. Experimental results validate new view-invariant gait analysing method, and show that the extracted gait feature is reliable in n...
In this article, a personal computer disassembly cell is presented. With this cell, a certain degree of automatism is afforded for the non-destructive disassembly process and for the recycling of these kinds of mass-produced electronic products. Each component of the product can be separated. The disassembly cell is composed of several sub-systems, each of which is dedicated to the planning and execution of one type of task. A computer vision system is employed for the recognition and localisation of the product and of each of its components. The disassembly system proposed here also has a modelling system for the products and each of its components, the information necessary for the planning of tasks, generating the disassembly sequence and planning of the disassembly movements. These systems co-operate with each other to achieve a se...
Identifier names (e.g., packages, classes, methods, variables) are one of most important software comprehension sources. Identifier names need to be analyzed in order to support collaborative software engineering and to reuse source codes. Indeed, they convey domain concept of softwares. For instance, ''getMinimumSupport'' would be associated with association rule concept in data mining softwares, while some are difficult to recognize such as the case of mixing parts of words (e.g., ''initFeatSet''). We thus propose methods for assisting automatic software understanding by classifying identifier names into domain concept categories. An innovative solution based on data mining algorithms is proposed. Our approach aims to learn character patterns of identifier names. The main challenges are (1) to automatically split identifier names int...
