Osteoarthritis is a chronic and crippling disease affecting an increasing number of people each year. With no known cure, it is expected to reach epidemic proportions in the near future. Accurate segmentation of knee cartilage from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans facilitates the measurement of cartilage volume present in a patient's knee, thus enabling medical clinicians to detect the onset of osteoarthritis and also crucially, to study its effects. This paper presents a fully automated method for segmenting and measuring human tibial cartilage volume from MRI scans. The method uses a global search technique developed by Felzenszwalb [1], involving triangulated polygons as deformable templates to initialise a patch-based active appearance model (PAAM) [2]. The cartilage volume obtained from our automatic method is benchmarked ag...
This thesis reports research toward the design of a procedure for , . automatic analysis and solution of problems in elementary classical mechanics. Various elements of the solution process have been examined, with principal emphasis on a detailed procedure for equation generation and solution. Directed graphs are introduced to represent the relations which hold among the algebraic variables in a specific problem. The general physical laws and principles are represented as a set of procedures which can be called as needed to construct the algebraic relationships for a given problem. A computer program is described which was implemented to verify the equation generation procedure. The limitations of the procedure are discussed, and an extended procedure is proposed.
Control system programs are usually validated by testing prior to their deployment. Unfortunately, testing is not exhaustive and therefore it is possible that a program which passed all the required tests still contains errors. In this paper we apply techniques of automatic verification to a control program written in ladder logic. A model is constructed mechanically from the ladder logic program and subjected to automatic verification against requirements that include timing. This consists of an exhaustive search of the model of the program, thus eliminating the drawback of testing. We believe that automatic verification can substantially enhance current validation procedures for control programs.

A closed loop servo approach is applied to the problem of controlling and estimating variance in nonstationary
signals. The new circuit closely resembles but is not the same as, automatic gain control (AGC)
which is common in radio and other circuits. The closed loop nature of the solution to this problem makes this
approach highly accurate and can be used recursively in real time.
J-Orchestra is an automatic partitioning system for Java programs.
J-Orchestra takes as input Java applications in bytecode format and
transforms them into distributed applications, running on distinct Java
Virtual Machines. To accomplish such automatic partitioning, J-Orchestra
uses bytecode rewriting to substitute method calls with remote method calls,
direct object references with proxy references, etc. Using J-Orchestra does
not require great sophistication in distributed system methodology--the user
only has to specify the network location of various hardware and software
resources and their corresponding application classes. J-Orchestra has
significant generality, flexibility, and degree of automation advantages
compared to previous work on automatic partitioning. For instance,
J-Orchestra can correctly partitio...

A new tuning scheme for linearly tunable high-Q filters is proposed. The tuning method is based on using the phase information for both frequency and Q factor tuning. There is no need to find out the relationship between a filter's passband magnitude and Q. A gm-C biquadratic filter is designed to demonstrate the proposed tuning circuitry. The project includes a phase locked loop (PLL) based frequency tuning loop, reference clock generator, and differential difference amplifier (DDA) for dealing with frequency and Q factor tuning loop and linearly tunable second order gm-C bandpass filter. Simulation results for a 10 MHz prototype filter using AMI 0.5?m process is presented. The chip testing results show that the automatic frequency tuning error is 2.5% for the 10 MHz case.
One possible way of implementing the TV telephone system
is by transmitting the video signal over existing telephone
cables. Not only is this attractive from an economical standpoint,
it also appears to be technically reasonable. However, there are
certain basic problems to be considered, particularly in reference
to baseband analogue transmission over the local subscriber
area.
For a start, it is expected that fixed equalisers will
be required at regular intervals along the line to compensate
for attenuation losses. These equalisers will have to be
designed on the basis of some average channel characteristic.
As a result, there will be uncorrected losses owing to deviations
from the average characteristic for the different TV telephone
connections. These and other channel imperfections will have
to be compensated automat...
An automatic system to weld multiple layers using Tungsten Arc (TIG) welding was in the process of being developed by Tool-Tec Welding Inc, prior to the company’s recent bankruptcy and subsequent closure. One of the project’s main concerns was the thermal expansion experienced by the part to be welded. To avoid having to install expensive sensors, it is necessary to predict the temperature and the dilatation of the mould during the welding process.
The mould to be welded is preheated to prevent excessive stress due to extreme temperature differences in the material. As well, it is necessary to maintain the temperature of the mould during the welding process in order to avoid distortions or changes in size larger than 1 mm.
Two models have been developed to predict the size of the preheat temperature of the mould and prevent mould s...
