One diagnosis of what is wrong with the Knowledge Argument rests on the Ability Hypothesis. This couples an ability analysis of knowing what an experience is like together with a denial that phenomenal propositions exist. I argue against both components. I consider three arguments against the existence of phenomenal propositions and find them wanting. Nevertheless I deny that knowing phenomenal propositions is part of knowing what an experience is like. I provide a hybrid account of knowing what an experience is like which is the coherent expression of a single idea: knowing what an experience is like is knowing what it would be like to have the phenomenal content of the experience as the content of an experience one is currently having. The existing literature on indicators of an optimal learning environment for high-ability students frequently discusses the concept of challenge. It is, however, not clear what, precisely, constitutes appropriate challenge for these students. In this study, the authors examined an undergraduate honours course, Advanced Cell Biology, which has succeeded extremely well in challenging students. Methods included interviews with teachers and students, analysis of course materials, and observation of class meetings. Speaking and listening are often presented as individualised skills or competences, a perspective emphasised by current assessment regimes. This paper , in contrast, focuses on speaking and listening as a social and collective practice rather than a neutral skill, looking at learning as socially situated rather than an individualised developmental process. It examines the way in which notions of differential abiity are constructed through talk in a 'mixed ability' classroom, showing how school English is produced differently for different groups of students. The paper concludes by offering a framework for considering classroom teaching approaches which might help to ensure that those pupils least engaged by the curriculum are not corralled into the most impoverished forms of learning.
We report two experiments that investigate the calculating strategy used by a low IQ savant to identify prime numbers. Hermelin and O'Connor (1990) had suggested previously that this subject may use a procedure first described by Eratosthenes to detect a prime number, namely, dividing a target number by all primes up to the square root of the target number and testing for a remainder. In the first experiment, we compare the reaction times of the savant to decide whether a number is prime with those of a control subject proficient in mathematical calculation. In addition, we measured the savant's speed of information processing using an inspection time task. In this paper, we examine the nature of spelling ability in adults, relating this type of representational competence to aspects of phonological and cognitive development as well as to schooling. The phenomenon of pre-literate spelling in young children is assessed in light of what can be inferred about spelling ability in adults.
This thesis aimed to contribute to the understanding of the role of decreased work ability and ill health on work participation and work performance of older workers. The longitudinal study on the role of four different health measures on exit from paid employment among workers aged 50 to 63 years old in 11 European countries showed, that controlling for individual and work related characteristics, poor self-perceived health was strongly associated with exit from paid employment. Focus group interviews (n=32) additionally showed that poor health and poor work circumstances are important in decisions to retire early, but social support and appreciative leadership style may be buffers in this process. Over the decades major effort has been directed at understanding the physical resources, improving the efficiency of production, and developing symbolic models that can be used to explore operational systems.
