The purpose of the study was to characterize alcohol drinking patterns of the youngsters from Trás‐os‐Montes e Alto Douro, and based on this knowledge we aim to demonstrate the thesis that the identified pattern should be understood as one of the leisure forms that the current society makes available to adolescents in industrialized countries. Another purpose was to identify the risk factors associated to adolescent drinking.
The sample consisted of 1632 individuals, residing in the Districts of Vila Real (men 391 and women 608) and Bragança (men 277 and women 357). These groups were subdivided according to the independent variables selected for the study: sex, age group (15‐17 and 18‐20 years of age), place of residence (urban vs. rural), education level (3rd cycle, secondary, higher education and not student), if adolescents were sm...
Desktop video editing plays an important role in the digital video market, and cooperative applications are important for organizations. Cooperative video editing tools can be an interesting solution for large broadcasters or for remote reporting, and such commercial products are lacking. This paper describes a cooperative video editing tool, Coview, which uses Web services to provide the cooperative functionalities. For this purpose, an overview is given of the basic issues of Web Services and Computer Supported Cooperative Work. Then, the Web Services-based cooperative infrastructure and the Coview prototype is described. Finally, some experimental results and concluding remarks are presented.
The present thesis is part of a wider set of studies that have been carried out for more than two decades at the Institute of Histology and Embriology of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra on the morphogenesis, histogenesis and histophysiology of the lung. It aims at contributing to a better knowledge of the effects of vitamin A on some of the more important regulators of lung vascular development.
Using laboratory mice, Mus musculus, strain ICR (CD-1®) as an experimental model, we followed the lung’s development from the 15th gestational day till the day of birth. This research project comprised the morphological study of VEGF, its receptors (VEGFR), Tie-2, MMP-1, MMP-9, and TIMP-1 in the lung of foetuses and neonates after prenatal administration of vitamin A. The quantification of VEGF and Tie-2 pulmonary levels a...
This work aimed at providing an overview of the most commonly used tools for the evaluation of cognitive symptoms of dementia, particularly dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), in clinical routine practice in the North/Northest of Portugal. Participated in the study 89 health professionals, from public and private sectors, among which 34 general practitioners (GPs), 12 neurologists, 14 psychiatrists, and 29 psychologists enrolled in performing evaluations of dementia and age-related cognitive change. A structured qualitative interview was carried out and their answers to each of the questions were categorized and subsequently quantified in terms of their frequency of occurrence. Results showed that GPs, when faced with the need to evaluate cognitive symptoms of dementia, tended to refer the patients to the neurologist and the psychiatrists...
A performance assessment is a tool to support the management and a factor of mobilization in the quality of services and should therefore be seen, as a stimulus to the development of improved quality of services.
The existing models have been developed to assess the quality of service from an operational, economic and financial evaluation, but lacks to combine and review the operational, economic and environmental performance of Organic Recovery Unit.
By that reason, the validation of a method to assess the performance on Organic Recovery Unit and improve the process was needed. The present work consisted in the design, construction and automation of a model for evaluating operating, economic and environmental performance management on Organic Recovery Unit. The principle was to create a single model that can evaluate the performance...
This study was conducted in order to determine the relationship between gender, age and physical activity, outside the school context, according to parenting styles and study attitudes and behaviors. The sample consisted of 272 students (101 girls and 171 boys) of a school from northern Portugal, aged between 13 and 21 years old (M=15.66, SD=1.71). Two questionnaires were used to assess the different dimensions in the study: Questionário de Estilos Educativos Parentais (QEEP) and Inventário de Atitudes e Comportamentos Habituais de Estudo (IACHE).
Regarding to parenting styles, the results showed that adolescents perceived their parents as being more responsive and less demanding. Furthermore, boys and girls perceived parenting styles in the same way, and younger teens (between 13 and 14 years old) perceived their parents as being mor...
The interplay between osteogenesis and angiogeneses, regulated by the interactions between osteoblastic and endothelial cells, respectively, is extremely important to maintain skeletal integrity. Bone formation is always preceded by vascular invasion and osteogenesis occurs in the vicinity of the new blood vessels. Thus, the anti-angiogenic properties of bisphosphonates may have direct effects on osteoblastic cells activity, decreasing bone formation events. However, the exact mechanism as bisphosphonates affect the interplay between these two processes in bone tissue is unknown.
This study describes the effects of alendronate and zoledronate on human osteoblastic and endothelial cells behavior, in monoculture and co-culture system.
MG63 osteoblastic-like cells and human dermal microvascular endothelial cells (HDMECs), were cultured ...
Relationship between achievement goals and sportsmanship attitudes young soccer players.
The present study aimed to: i) analyze the relationship between motivational orientations and sportsmanship attitudes; ii) analyze the effects of age and years of sports’ experience on motivational orientations and sportsmanship; iii) compare levels of achievement goals and sportsmanship according to the age levels and competitive level (regional vs. national); and, iv) analyze the effects of pressures from different social agents (parents / family, coaches, teammates and friends) on motivational orientations and sportsmanship levels.

The main results of this study showed that the task orientati...
The purpose of this study is to examine whether there is / was a research school of norms with
Matrix Values in Portugal and, if so, to characterize it. In order to do so we began by doing a
research study on other existing research schools in mathematics to identify indicators
allowing us to affirm the existence of a line of research in a particular area of mathematics, to
apply to our case.
The study design used was a case study and the collection of data was done through
interviews and documentary analysis.
In order to find the indicators we analyzed five case studies of Portuguese mathematicians
considered by the scientific community as having created and develop a mathematical
research school in a particular area of mathematics. After the analysis we found the common
indicators: training abroad, establishment of spaces f...
For centuries the culturing of elderberry (Sambucus nigra L.) has played an important role in traditional medicine to combat colds, flu and fever. In the last few decades the advances made in the knowledge of phytochemical composition of this plant, especially as regards their contents of phenolic compounds, it has been used in multiple trials aimed at preventing and curing some diseases.
In Portugal, in the Vale of Varosa and Tavora, south of the River Douro is the highest cultivation area for elderberry, with the purpose of producing flowers and berries for exportation and then subsequently used in the food and pharmaceutical industries.
The major aims of this study were to it. identify and quantify major pigments and phytochemical bioactives (phenolics) that are in part responsible for the positive health effects of the leaves, ...
