We report on a search for gravitational-wave bursts in data from the three LIGO interferometric detectors during their third science run. The search targets sub-second bursts in the frequency range 100–1100 Hz for which no waveform model is assumed and has a sensitivity in terms of the root-sum-square (rss) strain amplitude of hrss ∼ 10−20 Hz−1/2. No gravitational-wave signals were detected in the eight days of analysed data.

Phosphatidylinositol phosphates (PIPs) are low-abundance phospholipids that participate in a range of cellular processes, including cell migration and membrane traffic. PIP levels and subcellular distribution are regulated by a series of lipid kinases and phosphatases. In skeletal muscle, PIPs and their enzymatic regulators serve critically important functions exemplified by mutations of the PIP phosphatase MTM1 in myotubular myopathy (MTM), a severe muscle disease characterized by impaired muscle structure and abnormal excitation???contraction coupling. Data taken by the Mark II detector at the PEP storage ring was used to measure the rate of dilepton production in multihadronic events produced by e+e- annihilation at [radical sign]s=29 GeV. We determine the probability that a hadron initially containing a b (b) quark decays to a positive (negative) lepton to be 0.17-0.08+0.15, with 90% confidence level limits of 0.06 and 0.38.
The present studies were undertaken to determine whether hippocampal glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) biosynthesis, as inferred from mRNA expression, exhibit diurnal patterns of activation which may reflect or predict changes in plasma adrenocorticosteroid levels. Animals received either adrenalectomy (ADX) or sham adrenalectomy and were sacrificed at 4-h intervals throughout the diurnal cycle. Hippocampal and control brain areas were assayed for regional GR and MR mRNA changes via semiquantitative in situ hybridization histochemical analysis. 4-Nitrostilbene and twelve of its derivatives (eleven E-stilbenes and two Z-stilbenes) were examined for possible quantitative structure-activity relationships of their in vitro and in vivo genotoxicity. Relative mutagenicity was studied with and without S9 activation in Salmonella strains TA98 and TA100, as well as in the nitroreductase deficient strains TA98/NR and TA100/NR. Chromosomal aberrations in the bone-marrow cells of mice following intraperitoneal administration of the nitrostilbenes were observed as an indicator of in vivo genotoxicity. All of the compounds were active in TA98 and TA100 without S9 activation, with the exception of 4-amino-4'-nitrostilbene in TA100. We define corporate social action as those firm behaviors and practices that extend beyond immediate profit maximization goals and that are intended to increase social benefits or mitigate social problems for constituencies external to the firm. conceptualize corporate social action in terms of its nature, including the focus or target of corporate efforts (e.g., arts, education or health services) and the form that it takes (e.g., cash, in-kind donations, volunteerism), and level (or amount) of corporate social action. Anxiety-related personality traits, such as NEO neuroticism and TCI/TPQ harm avoidance, have been shown to have significant genetic components. To date, however, no specific genetic variants that contribute to these traits have been conclusively identified. At least 26 studies have investigated a putative association between a functional serotonin transporter promoter polymorphism (5-HTTLPR) and anxiety-related personality traits. The results of these studies have been inconsistent with some studies finding evidence for an association, and others not. We performed a meta-analysis of all applicable studies investigating this association. In the overall analysis (N = 5,629 subjects), we found suggestive evidence for an association between the 5-HTTLPR short allele (s) and increased anxiety-related personality trait scores ( P = 0.087). ...
At a fixed Cd2+ concentration water hyacinth () plants with greater root mass (dry weight) take up more metal ions as a function of time, and more metal ions are taken up by a plant as the solution volume is increased. Experiments in which several different metal ion complexers were present suggest that (1) the roots possess sites which initially reversibly bind free Cd2+, (2) some added complexers can compete with these root sites for free Cd2+, and (3) with time Cd2+ bound to the roots is translocated into into the root tissues effectively removing it from the equilibrium processes in solution. Many metal ions are taken up by the plant but only the micronutrient Zn2+ competes well with Cd2+ for uptake. Thus, there may be binding sites on the roots for specific metal ions.
