The purpose of this study was to characterize the levels of anxiety among young track and field athletes. The sample consisted of 147 athletes (89 males and 58 females). These were divided according to the independent variables defined for the present study, namely: competitive age group, sport and ranking. The4 instruments used were the CSAI-2 and ICPC. The statistical procedures used were the descriptive and correlation techniques. In general the results confirmed those obtained in prior studies. The results further suggested that the systematic use of the ICPC by coaches may be an adequate way to better know the athletes they work with.
The present study proposes a new multidisciplinary approach related to teaching in swimming. Swimming is an interdisciplinary physical activity, which can be truly important at the level of the motor learning and experimentation in aquatic activities. In the present manuscript, it was compared the present reality of teaching in Swimming with a new perspective, this one with a multidisciplinary scope. Following the referred analysis, it was presented a discussion about the orientation and adequacy of the contents of the Swimming curriculum for children and youngsters, which are populations with specific characteristics and development necessities. In this sense, after stating the relevance of a multidisciplinary perspective, it was proposed a new approach for basic aquatic motor skills acquisition based on four disciplines: swimming, wa...
The aim of this paper was to investigate the anthropometric and strength characteristics of elite male volleyball athletes and determines if differences exist in these characteristics between starters (S) and non-starters players (NS). A group of 22 professional male team volleyball players participated in the study and the players were categorized as S (n= 13) and NS (n= 9). Anthropometric characteristics, countermovement jump, overhead medicine ball throwing and maximal dynamic strength were evaluated in all the subjects. Significant diferences in age, hight and weight were noticed between S and NS. There were no significant differences between the two groups in strength and power values, except for squat performance, where S were significant strong than NS. These findings provide normative data for elite male volleyball players comp...
The present study aimed at checking the effectiveness of motor imagery on children's motor training. A total of 64 students aged 9 to 10 years, enrolled in three different 4th grade classes, participated in the study. Subjects in the modeling group were asked to view the video recording of an expert performing the task; those in the physical practice group were trained through the actual execution of the task; and subjects in the imagery group, were trained based solely on motor imagery. The task consisted of throwing a ball towards a target. Performance of subjects before and after training was assessed. Results showed improvements for all three groups. However, motor imagery and modeling groups obtained significantly higher mean scores than the physical practice group. Results are discussed in terms of the potential of motor imagery ...
The effect of carbohydrate supplementation or dietary modification has been presented as influential in the number of leukocytes in plasma and in some cases in the immune responses associated with exercise, which could reduce the risk of infections. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the effectiveness of the effect of carbohydrate supplementation in the attenuation of leukocytosis, induced after exercise. The selected databases were PubMed, EBSCO, Science Direct and SciELO, the search for the selected period was January 1999 to June 2010. We included 17 studies that showed supplementation with CHO. In the majority, supplementation was done by administering a drink. Supplementation of CHO in the exercise group when compared with control (placebo) had an effect on the total number of leukocytes Z = 4.35, lymphocytes Z = 3....
With our work, we intend to elaborate a document of research and support, as well as of orientation for future “appraisers” of the Body Composition, through the Anthropometry and more concretely, the measurement of Skinfolds. This arise because the detailed analysis of the Body Composition allows the quantification of many body components and becomes of extreme importance therefore allows to determine the total and regional amount of body fat (Fragoso and Vieira, 2000). Exists several techniques for the evaluation of the same Body Composition, since direct technique, indirect techniques and doubly indirect techniques. Logically, the direct techniques are more exactly, but unhappyly they are expensive and slow, for that, they become of difficult execution. Thus, the existence of the other techniques becomes very important because are mor...
The aim of the study was to investigate the self-goal setting on the motor skill learning. Sixty undergraduates with no experience in the Bachman ladder task were recruited for this research. The phases of the design were: acquisition (10 blocks × 10 trials) and transfer (10 trials). Participants were randomly assigned into two groups (n= 30): self-goal setting and yoked. From the yoked group a third group was stratified, which involved those participant that, even with a goal externally set, self-set their own goal (n= 20). In the acquisition phase a Friedman’s test was run in each experimental group to determine intragroup differences. In the transfer phase a Kruskal-Wallis test was carried out to check differences between groups. The results showed that for all groups there was increase in performance during acquisition phase. In th...
Drug decriminalization in Portugal is a failure, despite several published articles claiming exactly the opposite. This paper will show that there is an illogical campaign supporting the Portuguese drug policy and an unacceptable manipulation of factual information. A book written by Glenn Greenwald, a lawyer fluent in Portuguese, suggests the opposite of what the research data demonstrates. He claims that Portugal is a success. Mr. Greenwald is a member of the Cato Institute, an American libertarian think-tank that has been advocating for drug legalization for many years. This complex issue has been broadcast worldwide by the press, both Portuguese and international, boosting the proliferation of the ‘good news’ about the Portuguese drug policy and distorting the real analysis of what is going on in this country. This is happening to...
