Higher Education institutions have developed online information services and degrees as an echo of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) incidence in all society fields. Equal access to education is a fundamental right; but equal access to higher education for people with disabilities is far from being achieved yet. To this inequality has to be added the difficulty of some groups to participate in the information society, the so called infoexclusion. The short number of students with disabilities in higher education makes evident the presence of barriers for this people to get into this educational level. One of them is the low degree of accessibility to digital services and studies offered by the Universities, something that can be considered a new kind of segregation.
Juvenile hormone (JH) is a crucial regulator of development and reproduction in insects. As a result, understanding the regulation of JH biosynthesis is an important goal. Farnesoic Acid O-Methyl Transferase, an enzyme involved in JH biosynthesis regulation in crustaceans, may also have a regulatory role in controlling JH biosynthesis in D. melanogaster. To validate this possibility, the effects of under-expression and over-expression of FAMeT were tested on male and female development, longevity and stress tolerance in D. melanogaster. Developmental assays, longevity assays, and starvation stress tests were performed. Results showed that both under-expression and over-expression of FAMeT negatively affected development, longevity and stress tolerance. Arbutus Lake, located in the Adirondack Park (New York, USA), is a minimally-impacted lake that is thought to be sensitive to changes in climate. In a paleolimnological study of a center core from Arbutus Lake, large and significant shifts in scaled-chrysophyte assemblages occurred ca.1980 that were consistent with measured increases in temperature over the past 3 decades. The objectives of this study were to determine whether diatom assemblages in the same core also exhibited changes, and whether these changes were consistent with the timing of scaled-chrysophyte shifts ca.1980, and meteorological records. Overall, 225 diatom taxa were identified in the sediment core from ca.1911 to 2010. Relative abundance (%) and concentrations of diatoms were generally stable pre-1980.
