The Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) has been used in many scientific and engineering applications. The use of FFT for financial derivatives has been gaining momentum in the recent past. In this thesis, i) we have improved a recently proposed model of FFT for pricing financial derivatives to help design an efficient parallel algorithm. The improved mathematical model put forth in our research bridges a gap between quantitative approaches for the option pricing problem and practical implementation of such approaches on modern computer architectures. The thesis goes further by proving that the improved model of fast Fourier transform for option pricing produces accurate option values. ii) We have developed a parallel algorithm for the FFT using the classical Cooley-Tukey algorithm and improved this algorithm by introducing a data swapping...
This thesis is an empirical analysis of trucking and truck size and weight (TS&W) regulations in the Mid-continent corridor. Based on this analysis, it compares and contrasts plausible near term TS&W policy options relating to this corridor. The approach of the research is to understand the corridor's TS&W regulations, trucking activity, and commodity and trade flows; with a view to facilitating the comparing and contrasting of TS&W policy options. With this understanding, the thesis then compares and contrasts the TS&W policy options. The corridor is governed by a complex set of TS&W regulations emanating directly from the U.S. Federal Government, the nine corridor States, Mexico, Manitoba, and indirectly from other jurisdictions throughout North America. These TS&W regulations have created a complex truck fleet with many different ph...
The hierarchy of the various versions of the second layer condition, transferability of the second layer condition to extension rings, and relativization of it with respect to a torsion theory are investigated. We show that the strong second layer condition is indeed stronger than the ordinary second layer condition by introducing an intermediate condition, called the right restricted strong second layer condition, and its equivalent versions in Chapter 2. The second layer condition is passed to certain extension rings. Letzter proved that if R is a noetherian ring satisfying the second layer condition and S is an overring of R such that $\sb{R}S$ and $S\sb{R}$ are finitely generated, then S satisfies the second layer condition. In Chapter 3, we e tend this result to a noetherian ring satisfying just the right second layer condition. ...
The purpose of this study was to answer the question: how do children influence attraction choice while on vacation? A cross-sectional, self-administered, web-based survey of 99 adult facilitators visiting one of three tourist attractions in Winnipeg, Canada with at least one child between the ages of six and 17 was used to: 1) gain insight on how groups with a child/children prefer to travel; 2) understand the reasons why groups with a child/children choose to visit a select type of attraction; 3) examine the views of adult facilitators who travel with a child/children on the child/children’s participation with regards to the selection of tourist attractions; and 4) investigate which attraction characteristics adult facilitators believe provide their entire group with the most satisfying experience. Results indicate that children have...
A new method of analyzing soils and water utilizes the solid-phase microextraction (SPME) technique which allows the derivatization of the analytes on the polyacrylate fibre coating eliminating the traditional cleanup process when analyzing acid herbicides and chlorophenols. Confirmation of the chlorophenols was performed by derivatization with diazomethane and comparison with commercially available chloroanisoles or by GC with ion trap detection. LOD ranged from 0.01 $\mu$g/L to 0.05 $\mu$g/L whereas LOQ ranged from 0.03 $\mu$g/L to 0.07 $\mu$g/L for 2,4,5-T and dicamba respectively. Reproducibility expressed as % RSDs for the derivatization method ranged from 2.7-31.4%. The use of the SPME technique has been optimized to allow for the analysis of chlorophenols and acid herbicides in soils and water through decreased pH, addition of N...
The purpose of this thesis is to examine and explain in detail the recent and developing military relationship between Israel and Turkey. To do so effectively, the thesis focuses on four aspects of this relationship, all of which are interconnected and equally important; without each of them, the thesis cannot be adequately understood. The first refers to the theoretical incentives that have driven Turkey and Israel to realise (relative) security in co-operation with each other. The second factor relates to the historical and geographic context in which both countries find themselves. To that end, a close look at the history of their regional relations will reveal that most of these relations have contributed to their physical insecurity and a need to overcome this deficiency by bringing their militaries closer together. Third, the c...
This thesis studies the Second-order Least Squares (SLS) estimation method in regression models with and without measurement error. Applications of the methodology in general quasi-likelihood and variance function models, censored models, and linear and generalized linear models are examined and strong consistency and asymptotic normality are established. To overcome the numerical difficulties of minimizing an objective function that involves multiple integrals, a simulation-based SLS estimator is used and its asymptotic properties are studied. Finite sample performances of the estimators in all of the studied models are investigated through simulation studies.
The trend toward reduced or zero tillage systems may bring about changes in the physical environment for crop roots. A study was conducted on three Manitoba soils (Marquette heavy clay, Fortier silty clay loam, and Souris loamy sand) with the objectives of: a) assessing the effects of contrasting tillage systems on various soil physical properties; and b) relating these effects to wheat or barley response. The zero (ZT) and conventional (CT) tillage treatments had been established between 3 and 10 years prior to the initiation of the study. Penetrometer resistance, bulk density, soil moisture, pore size distribution and oxygen diffusion rate were measured at various depths and times during two growing seasons. The effects of the tillage systems were generally low, particularly in the poorly structured Souris loamy sand. Penetration re...
This qualitative study examines the relationship between advocacy and youth empowerment and was designed to collect information from an organization run by and for youths, called the Federation of British Columbia Youth in Care Network. One purpose was to examine the organization's impact on the recent changes that have occurred in the legislation, policies and structures of youth services provided by the British Columbia government, and the other was to examine whether the process of engaging in these change initiatives was empowering to those involved. It was hypothesized that youths participating in a youth run advocacy group would become empowered through their actions in three governmental decision making processes: the Gove Inquiry, the creation of the Child, Family and Community Services Act and the restructuring of the Ministr...
