The 5' end of eukaryotic and viral mRNAs contain a "cap" structure with the sequence m7G(5')pppN(5'). The methylation of the 7-position on the guanine cap is very important to proper mRNA processing and initiation of translation. The enzyme responsible for this methylation, RNA guanine-7-methyltransferase, has been cloned and studied from a number of different species, including human, X. laevis, yeast, and C. elegans. The sequences for mouse guanine-7-methyltransferase cDNA and protein have been deduced based upon identity of mouse ESTs to the cDNA of the human enzyme. The deduced mouse cDNA encodes an ORF of 465 amino acids and is 76.4% identical to the human enzyme, or 86.5% within the C-terminal domain.
Active site characterization of mouse and human guanine-7-methyltransferase indicates a cysteine residue is important to proper en...
Laurie Bolster Abstract
Rapid establishment of interpreting skill and knowledge standards for public school sign language interpreters has created a virtual mandate for their immediate, time-compressed, professionalization. A series of federal laws requiring accessibility to communication for deaf people have escalated demand for interpreters far beyond the supply. Thousands of people with varying levels of knowledge, skill, and experience, have been drawn into service in schools without professional preparation. Responding to specialized research, evaluation, technology, and education related to educational interpreting, states have quickly been establishing standards for interpreting skill and knowledge including phased in de...
Due to inadequate training and an undeveloped ability to recognize dangerous scenarios, youth workers are exposed to many dangers in the agriculture and lawn care industries. With the abundance of new technologies available on the market, a project was devised to prevent youth from heat exhaustion and equipment run overs by employing sensor based technologies. Using aural temperature measurement techniques involving a thermistor and thermopile, an accurate estimation of core body temperature can be made. The measurements performed by the devices are recorded and transmitted wirelessly over a ZigBee network using XBee radiofrequency modules. Utilizing the properties of radiofrequency transmission, the Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) is used to approximate the distance between devices. With accuracy comparable to GPS methods a...
The design challenge of this project was to create an engaging environment for learning; one that through its architecture, encourages discovery, sensory and intellectual development and stewardship of the environment.
This school seeks to embody the Montessori ideal of âstructure and freedomâ. Through the design process, an âarchitecture of oppositesâ emerged â edges and endings, light and dark, solid and transparent, quiet and noise, city and nature, bridge and barrier. It is this struggle between opposing forces that creates a dynamic environment.
A site at the intersection of P and 26th Streets in Georgetown on the western edge of Rock Creek Park was chosen for the project because of its nature as a haven within an urban context.
Designing architecture that reinforces urbanity starts with an intuitive understanding. Urban places are complex, containing many simple systems which combine to make a chaotic whole. This complexity is full of events, incidence and energy. In creating an architecture for urbanity, complexity is used to release the potential of a place to be urban.
The purpose of the building proposed by this thesis is to reinforce the ideas of urbanity in historic downtown Blacksburg. It supports the expansion of the downtown urban density along Main Street and at the same time provides an important urban node, manifesting the meeting of the Town of Blacksburg and the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. It is an architecture that supports urbanity.
The objectives of this study were to
determine the effects the temperature
sensitivity of alleles of Rsv1 in soybean
(Glycine max (L.) Merr.). Soybean cultivars
carrying alleles of Rsv1 were exposed to
several heat treatments designed to induce
heat shock protein production prior to
inoculation with soybean mosaic virus
(SMV). The heat treatment methods were
similar to those employed in the research with
N gene-tobacco mosaic virus studies. The
soybean cultivars used were Lee 69, York,
Kwanggyo, Ogden and PI96983, carrying
the Rsv, Rsv1-y, Rsv1-k, Rsv1-t, and Rsv1
allles of Rsv1, respectively, and were
selected to provide a range of reactions to
selected SMV pathotype groups. For
example Rsv1-y and Rsv1-k give a necrotic
response to SMV G4 and SMV G6,
respectively, while both are resistant to SMV
G1. To determine the durability of res...
This thesis on Low Impact Development (LID) Practices provides design guidelines and principles for three important LID practices: green roofs, rainwater harvesting and bioswales. The most important component of the thesis is the qualitative analysis of various case studies based on the LID objectives drawn from the literature review for each LID practice.
Through the course of my research, I found that there was no one single source which provided information on the design guidelines accompanied by case examples which could help the designer with built examples where the LID practices have been executed. Therefore, developing this thesis document which provided all this information started as my masters thesis project. The document is designed to be used by people with a variety of expertise like landscape architects, landscape contra...
Focusing on Darwinism, David Hull argues that the protean character of conceptual systems is explained by their nature as historical entities which evolve. If they evolve as biological species do, Hull argues, then they cannot have an âessenceâ â a set of tenets that all and only instances of the conceptual system has throughout all time. There are no tenets a scientific research program must retain to count as an instance of a particular program. I advance two considerations against this view. First, research programs require a critical cohesiveness among their tenets to inspire and guide research. Second, it is the function of such programs to guide the search for answers to families of questions in a particular domain in a particular spirit. These factors dictate that conceptual systems must retain certain key tenets. This re-emerge...
The purpose of this study was to determine the levels of concern of central office instructional administrators, building level principals, and teachers in Superintendents' Region Seven as they implement Virginias' Standards of Learning initiative. The Stages of Concern (SOC) Questionnaire and demographic sheet were mailed to a sample of 405 instructional personnel of Superintendents' Region Seven in Virginia; 231 responded. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multivariate analysis of variance procedures at the a=. 05 level of significance.
Results revealed that central office instructional administrators (N=31), elementary principals (N=31), secondary principals (N=32), and elementary (N=33) and secondary teachers (N=33) not responsible for administering SOL Tests possessed profiles indicative of nonusers. Th...
