Presentation given at the April 2003 Conference between the University of Maryland Libraries and the Tec de Monterrey, in Monterrey, Mexico.
Accurate quantification of forest carbon stocks and fluxes is critical for the successful modeling and mitigation of climate change. This research focuses on forest carbon stock quantification, both in terms of testing emerging remote sensing approaches to forest carbon modeling, and examining allometric equations used to estimate biomass stocks in field plots. First, we test controversial theoretical predictions of forest allometry through the mapping of the allometric variability using field plots across the U.S. we find that there is considerable variability in forest allometry across space, largely driven by local environment and life history. However, in tall forests, allometries tend to converge toward theoretical predictions, suggesting that theory may be a useful constraint on allometry in certain forests. Second, we shift to a...
Two librarians from the University of Maryland (UM) partnered with a faculty member in the UM’s College of Information Studies to develop and offer a study abroad course to Nicaragua. This article documents the development and implementation of this unique service-learning course.
This document is a collection of essays in two issues of interest in macroeconomics and international finance. Chapter 2 introduces price promotions in a monetary DSGE model where consumers differ in their price sensitivity and look for promotions, and where firms choose their regular and promotional prices as well as the frequency of promotions. In this environment, regular and promotional prices coexist, firm-level prices show rigidity in the form of inertial reference values from which weekly prices temporarily deviate, and promotions provide a new channel of price adjustment in the face of shocks. As a result, the economy displays near neutrality with respect to monetary shocks, with an impact response of output equal to one third of the one obtained in a model with no promotions. This result contrasts sharply with those of similar...
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is highly prevalent among U.S. Spanish-speaking Latinos. Although MDD is very treatable, the lack of empirically-supported treatments precludes this population's access to quality mental health care. Following the promising results of a small open-label pilot study in which we tested the efficacy of Behavioral Activation Treatment for Depression (BATD) in a sample Latinos with Spanish-speaking preference, we conducted a randomized control trial (RCT; N = 46) that compared BATD (N = 23) to supportive counseling (N = 23) across various domains, including depression, BATD proposed mechanisms (activity level and environmental reward), and non-specific psychotherapy factors. Results indicated that relative to SC, BATD led to greater decreases in depressive symptoms over time (p = 0.04) and greater MDD remissi...
Much of research and development work has been dedicated to implement the heat and mass transfer using microchannel technology; however, it is not yet cost effective and is limited to higher end applications such as electronics cooling and selected applications in automotive and aircraft heat exchangers. The work on mass transfer application of micro channels also has been very limited, despite the very high potential contribution of micro channels for mass transfer enhancement. Scaling up of microchannel equipment presents several manufacturing and process organization challenges such as flow distribution inside microchannels, cost, fouling, high pressure drops etc. This thesis presents the development of a cost effective and compact tubular manifold microchannel heat and mass exchanger (MMHX) for industrial applications. A novel des...
This dissertation addresses the concern that music by Black composers remains inadequately represented in concert performances. Though a number of factors account for this unfortunate circumstance, the problem can be positively addressed. This dissertation focuses specifically on making Robert Nathaniel Dett's oratorio, The Chariot Jubilee, more accessible to performers and audiences alike. An instrumental accompaniment comprising of one flute, one oboe, one bassoon, one french horn, piano, organ and a string quartet affords access to choirs of many levels the opportunity to delve into this luminous piece of music. This has been demonstrated by combining the musical forces of the Oakwood University Aeolians, members of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, and tenor soloist Roderick George from the University of Montevallo.
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) presents a significant public health challenge. Given the symptoms heterogeneity and widespread changes in brain structure and Function in MDD, there may be several subtypes of depression not sufficiently distinguished by current diagnostic criteria but important to recognize to improve clinical outcomes. One of the two core symptoms of MDD is `markedly diminished interest or pleasure in all, or almost all, activities most of the day, nearly every day' and is often referred to as anhedonia (DSM-IV, V). Anhedonia may have a variety of underlying causes such as not finding previously enjoyed activities appealing, lacking motivation to engage or reluctance to put forth necessary effort, and these processes may be quite unique and not differentiated by current assessment methods (Treadway...
