This thesis entitled "Media, Politics and Opinion: a complex triade - an approach to the more representative opinion articles published in the Portuguese press", aims to examine the quality press, which is the reference for such articles, from both the theoretical and empirical point of view. It attempts to define the importance of opinion articles within the ambit of the media. More specifically it attempts: 1. to assess the role of such articles 2. to see how opinion is viewed by the very people who give it 3. to determinate how receptive readers are to that opinion. As far as methodology is concerned, the following instruments were used: 1. interviews with columnists; 2. a survey among readers of the newspapers studied (Público, Diário de Notícias, Expresso e Independente) and 3. an analysis of the content of a corpus em...
This dissertation develops a research about public, media, communication, politics and democracy in two interrelated levels: a theoretical delineation of this problematic; an empirical work into uses and opinion about media and information in the Portuguese reality, in the first decade of the XXI century. Does it still make sense to talk about “neighbourhood” in the Lisbon urban universe, after the profound transformations occurred in Portugal and in the World in the last decades, if not only to refer to “historic neighbourhoods”, or “popular neighbourhoods”? If it does, what is a “neighbourhood” nowadays? And in what ways, with which materials and symbolisms, is it shaped? This thesis searches to find answers to this questions focusing in the analyses of the “Telheiras” case, one of the new “neighbourhoods” of Lisbon. It is concluded that the concept of “neighbourhood” subsists in the imaginary of social actors, like an idealized image that guides the act. It also sustains that the existence of the modern “neighbourhood”, although indivisible from a physical territory, affirms it self, in a rhetoric territory.
This cross-national comparative (FR, PT, UK) research on homelessness takes the concept of risk as fundamental analytical string. Risk is a cultural and social construct that to be analysed leads necessarily to compare the perceptions of different social actors. In this case the institutional level and the homeless themselves. As the institutional plan, responsible for the categorisation and regulation of the phenomenon, are considered documental sources (risk theories, empirical researches and international studies) and the social workers (from volunteers to managers). In what regards the homeless, the analysis focus on their life trajectories and symbolic perceptions for several domains, including survival strategies and the evaluation of the social provision services. The empirical research is based on semi-directive interviews c...
Freedom of the press should be seen as one of the fundamental elements for the implementation of democratic regimes. This paper tries to analyse the way in which the smallness of a territory or a population necessarily determines a lesser degree of freedom of the press, or whether this is more the consequence of the type of regime operating. The analysis of the questionnaires distributed to journalists working in Madeira led to the conclusion that a) there are limitations to press freedom, and b) these do not exist in Portugal when the country is analysed as a whole. Analysis of the interviews led to the conclusion that limits to press freedom are a result of local government action, and specifically that of its president, as well as the lack of means and/or lack of will to demand the minimum conditions to fulfil their obligat...
