This thesis comprises both creative and critical work. Imaginative Truth is a collection of biographical narratives in short story form inspired by the lives of six lone older women. Arranged chronologically per life depicted, every story and the accompanying transcript or manuscript excerpt offers a glimpse of a particular moment from each woman’s life, written in a manner necessary to and reflective of the life being illuminated. The critical commentary documents the need for effective literary representations of older people, the problem of representation especially of lone older women and the value of life story narratives. It covers ethical issues relating to the representation of real people in narrative form and locates examples of best practice from both life writing critics and practitioners. The commentary includes a discussi...
This exegesis investigates techniques for the creation of literary characters using Milan Kundera as theorist and F.Scott Fitzgerald as practitioner. The universality of Milan Kundera’s theory of basing characters on existential problems is tested in the case study, The Great Gatbsy, by F.Scott Fitzerald. Kundera and Fitzgerald’s contrasting techniques for character construction are investigated to reveal how existential problems can operate as both literary devices and themes. The essential difference between Kundera’s and Fitzgerald’s treatment of existential problems is that Kundera uses existential problems to create characters and Fitzgerald uses characters to create the existential problem of the world of the novel. Through investigation of Kundera’s and Fitzgerald’s techniques and reflection on the process of writing...
In his exploration of ‘the phenomenon of the look’ in Being and Nothingness (Sartre 1969, p. 268), Jean-Paul Sartre suggests that the self is split into two by the look of the other, such that ‘my being-as-object or being-for-others is profoundly different from my being-for-myself’ (1969, p. 273). In this article, I suggest that Sartre’s ‘duality’ of the looked-upon self is relevant to celebrity studies discourse which holds that the celebrity is divided into a core self and a public persona (Morin 1961, Braudy 1986, Dyer and McDonald 1998, Marshall 1998, Rojek 2001). The unease Sartre describes as part of his philosophy of ontological duality sheds light on the psychology of celebrity duality, which Leo Braudy describes as a ‘constant tension’ for those subjected to ‘the incessant spotlight’ of fame (Braudy 1986, p. 592). Sartre’s arg...
Background: Rigorous evaluation of community based interventions is necessary to build the evidence base for maternal and child survival in developing countries. Randomised controlled trials may be the most reliable method of determining effectiveness of interventions, but they are unable to evaluate the impact of context and implementation, and explain how an outcome occurred. This thesis explores the outcome of a cluster randomised controlled trial using women’s groups in Nepal. Intervention areas experienced a 30% reduction in neonatal mortality, and increases in good care behaviours. I describe how communities experienced the intervention and explore how the implementation process and community context affected the community response. Methods: I used qualitative research methods, purposefully sampling stakeholders from two interv...
As Ulrich Beck suggests in World at Risk, the fear and anticipation of Islamist extremism has become a dominant strand in contemporary perceptions of risk. Across a range of media, a set of ‘stock’ radicalization narratives have emerged. Typically, a misguided loner of formerly respectable background, often under the tutelage of a fanatic mentor, is brainwashed into embracing a dangerous perversion of Islam. In the background, the complicity of the wider Muslim community is implied in terms of an attitude of passive tolerance towards pernicious elements in their midst. This essay explores some notable attempts in fiction to unpick such popular radicalization narratives. In John Updike’s Terrorist and Sunjeev Sahota’s Ours are the Streets, the psychological and faith dimensions of suicide bombing are a key focus. Set against the de...
