Perceiving students, science students especially, as mere consumers of facts and information belies the importance of a need to engage them with the principles underlying those facts and is counter-intuitive to the facilitation of knowledge and understanding. Traditional didactic lecture approaches need a re-think if student classroom engagement and active learning are to be valued over fact memorisation and fact recall.

This study aims to characterize the social intelligence of Portuguese students attending the 8th grade, as well as, to analyze the differences in the social intelligence results by sex and age. Participants were 540 students (264, 48.9% boys and 276, 51.1% girls) with ages between 11 and 15 years old (M=13.22; SD=.586), attending the 8th grade at public schools in northern, central and southern Portugal. With this study we propose to investigate exploratory models about the effects of factors – pupils’ gender, age and school level – that may interfere with attitudes, affect and emotions toward learning, while explicitly modelling the multilevel structure of a large data set from an educational context.
Based on a study with Portuguese youngsters (N=670) from regular classes, whom we applied the QATS – Questionnaire of Attitudes Toward School and the EQi - Emotional Intelligence Inventory

The aim of this study, developed in different European countries (Cyprus, Germany, Portugal and Italy), was to explore and compare teachers’ perceived professional competences and practice, with the students’ awareness of their teaching. The original Italian questionnaires, one for students and another for teachers, were translated into Portuguese. Nine secondary schools were selected to run the survey in Lisbon and its suburban areas. Odemira is the most extensive municipality in Portugal (1721Km2) and is seen as a low density region because of its territorial dispersion and low population density (15.10 inhab/km2 | 26036 inhab. total).
