This research intends to answer two main objectives: to analyse the discourses of
political leaders represented in parliament, namely what they transmit and how they do it, why
they use a specific word and/or expression, point out contradictions, translate the political
gibberish2, and establish comparisons. The other objective is to determine whether these
discourses lead to a serious political debate in Portugal, in light of the current economicfinancial
conjecture.
Using the analysis of discourses, the speeches of PSD leader (Pedro Passos Coelho), of
PS (António José Seguro), of CDS-PP (Paulo Portas), of PCP (Jerónimo de Sousa) and from BE
(João Semedo and Catarina Martins) shown in Telejornal (RTP1), on the weekdays from 6th to
24th of May.
